Intra-Governmental Tournament Kicks Off with Exciting Opening Day at SKD Sports Complex

The much-anticipated Intra-Governmental Tournament, a sporting competition exclusively involving government institutions, officially kicked off on Wednesday, May 5, 2026, at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Complex in Paynesville.

Organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the three-month tournament is intended to strengthen camaraderie among senior officials, middle-level staff, and junior employees across government institutions.

The tournament also seeks to promote physical fitness, mental wellness, teamwork, and healthy interaction while maintaining continuity in government operations.

The official opening ceremony began with a colorful  parade from ELWA Junction to the SKD Sports Complex, showcasing unity and enthusiasm among participating institutions. More than 46 government ministries and agencies are taking part in this year’s edition, including first-time participants, the Liberia Refugees Repatriation Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) and the Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA).

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Deputy Minister for Administration, Henry B. Yonton Jr., expressed appreciation to all participating institutions for their commitment to the initiative. He encouraged teams to demonstrate discipline, unity, and good sportsmanship throughout the competition while proudly representing their respective institutions.

Deputy Minister Yonton also lauded the Ministry’s Sports Department for its dedication and hard work in ensuring the successful launch of the tournament before officially declaring the games open.

Opening day fixtures produced exciting action in both kickball and football.
In kickball, the Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA) was awarded victory following a forfeiture by the Liberia Refugees Repatriation Resettlement Commission (LRRRC), while the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) delivered a dominant performance with a convincing 6–0 victory over the Forestry Development Authority (FDA).

Football action also entertained fans at the SKD Sports Complex. LRRRC and LNTA battled to a goalless draw, while CBL and FDA shared the spoils in a thrilling 2–2 encounter.

The tournament continues today with another round of exciting fixtures. The Ministry of Public Works will take on the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) in the opening match, followed by a clash between the Ministry of Local Government and the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA).

The final fixtures of the day will feature the Ministry of Commerce and Industry against the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) in both kickball and football as the tournament continues to build momentum.
